Helen S Cohen

Helen S. Cohen is an artist and filmmaker based in the San Francisco Bay Area whose dynamic mixed media paintings are in private and corporate collections throughout the U.S. Her paintings are at once intimate and expansive, evoking interior and exterior landscapes that have both geographic and psychological dimensions to them. Helen’s art practice is informed by a long history of activism and professional work with cultural, educational and community development organizations. She holds a BA from Hampshire College, a master’s in urban planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a postgraduate certificate in creative practice from Transart Institute/Plymouth University, UK.

My studio is a refuge where I delight in the immediacy and messy, visceral process of making mixed media paintings. Each composition takes shape through a kind of “call and response” process – a dynamic, intimate conversation between the canvas and the materials I work into it: thin and saturated layers of paint; drips and washes; scribbles and scratches; collage fragments from discarded paintings as well as written words and graphic elements taken from journals, sketchbooks and the detritus of daily life.

In my paintings I explore the idea of “sense of place” and all its myriad layers of meaning. What has evolved is a kind of mapping of my life experience that has both geographic and psychological dimensions to it, where internal and external meld. Forms take shape that hold emotional meaning for me — horizons, openings and portals, bridges and border crossings; nests, bowls and vessels.

My work as a painter has evolved alongside two other central aspects of my life: my work as a documentary filmmaker and my experience as the mother of a child (now a grown woman) with a developmental disability. As a filmmaker, I’ve explored different approaches to visual story telling that have influenced my more abstract work as a painter. As a mom, I’ve been immersed in the world of non-verbal learning and communication, fascinated by the mysterious process of language acquisition and the ways in which language informs intelligence, perception, and meaning. This experience has been a driving force in my development as an abstract painter.

In recent years I have been developing a body of work (Beyond Measure) using collage materials drawn from years of accumulated educational and aptitude tests, work sheets, homework, and my daughter’s marks and artwork. Working with these materials as collage elements is a cathartic process through which I reclaim, deface and repurpose the ripped and torn fragments into new constellations, giving them their own unique artistic presence while adding another layer of personal content to the work.

In addition to the many varied artists whose work I have studied and been inspired by, I was greatly influenced by the late Leigh Hyams, my mentor, teacher and friend for over twenty years. Leigh’s greatest gift to me was nurturing an insatiable joy and curiosity about art, and cultivating an ability to see the art in everything – shapes in the negative space between tree limbs and the beautiful lines in sidewalk cracks; the variety and vibrancy of colors in dirt and vegetables; the temperature of light. I’m guided by this enhanced perception and “visual language” in my studio practice.

Flora Bowley

Flora Bowley: Inhale | Exhale
Comprised of work created entirely during her residency here, this show unveils a powerful and exciting new direction.

Flora Bowley (pronounced bowl-lee) is a celebrated artist, author of four books, community builder, and visionary creative guide.

Blending over thirty years of professional painting experience with her experience as a movement and breathwork facilitator, bodyworker, mindfulness practitioner, and lifelong seeker, Flora’s popular in-person retreats, online courses, and books have empowered a global network of brave painters while creating a holistic movement in the intuitive art world.

Flora believes creative expression (in all its many forms) is about moving life force energy as a way to stay clear, connected, and resilient in our ever-changing world.

Currently, Flora is co-creating and stewarding a 20-acre retreat center an hour outside of Portland, OR where you can find her singing to trees, making music playlists, and creating a glorious mess in her studio.

Laura Klopfenstein

The “American Dream” is a bizarre concept. Some are evolving and progressive, some are stuck in a dark past and celebrate ignorance. Yet we share custody of our physical, emotional and spiritual space, and have major problems to solve.

As we all know, mothers worry. I feel a maternal sense of protectiveness for the earth and people of all ages, all walks of life. I like to create imagery that is rooted in the natural world and summoned from my imagination. It is a celebration of beauty and a reminder of our responsibility as a species with the gift of forethought.

Works are informed by concepts of stewardship, activism, playfulness, and awe. Some art works are more personal and touch on the push-pull energy of social roles that are both depleting and inspiring: being a woman in the US and a mother. I like soft and hard, pretty and ugly, together. My artistic process is guided by layering, the physical qualities of textures, forms and colors, storytelling, and humor.

I like to use symbols to explore ideas: human teeth, fingernails, fishing lures, cacti and oceanic organisms. For example, I include teeth because as humans, we all have teeth no matter what we look like and they are a shared connection. Other works also use fishing lures. I think they look like little people, ghosts when together, non-thinking masses with a permanent expression of confusion, apathy. And I combine them with flora and fauna – to share space with the fishing lure “people”, all linked together.

Other ongoing series explore labor roles, the beauty/fashion industry, climate change, environment, disposable culture and socioeconomic imbalance.

In my practice, I use a variety of media on paper and canvas: acrylics, gouache, graphite, Austin tap water, magazines, encyclopedias, ink and secret tools.
