Theresa Stirling

Telling stories with wax layers & fire

Theresa is currently accepting commission work on a limited basis. Please inquire by calling (707) 563-1360

Theresa’s work has received press in print and online, including a 2-part interview with Decoist Architecture. Contemporary, hand-built wax artwork created with fire and beeswax, in a dreamy studio setting by the sea. After more than 14 years of working with hot beeswwax, Theresa continues to have steady work through gallery representation and referrals from contented collectors. Solitude and life balance come through in her works, influenced by nature.

Theresa Stirling’s encaustic (beeswax and damar varnish) paintings are built by slowly layering up to 20 or more thin layers of hot beeswax, oil paint and colorful pigments. Built by hand, each brush-stroke is carefully fused with a blowtorch, creating a textured, luminous painting. The mood can be one of serenity, color, a memory, or raw-yet-sophisticated.  These are artworks that nourish. There is almost no limit to the effect she can create.

Theresa Stirling's Olympic Peninsula studio is nestled in lush forests, opening to a sunny spot on a canal. Inside the cozy studio is a fireplace, and tables covered with current projects. Theresa has been enchanted with creating using natural beeswax, damar tree sap resin, and generous amounts of oils. Pottery scraping tools, blowtorches and brushes are scattered. The studio is welcoming and not too tidy; place where hand-built custom art is made with wax & fire.
