Alexis Mixter: Solo Exhibition

  • Jen Tough Gallery 4 North Chamisa Drive Santa Fe, NM, 87508 United States (map)

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 11, 4:00-6:00

The work of Alexis Mixter is rooted in the time taken to make a single line. The inability to rush through this process. It is about the smell of the wood as it burns and the texture of the lines as they form. It is about trying to control that which is so very difficult to control through patience and the tactile connection to the wood.

Using an ancient technique typically associated with “masculine” hand-crafts and easily recognizable imagery, and repurposing it through abstraction and the influences of “traditionally feminine” things such as braided hair and weaving, Alexis finds something entirely new.

Each piece invites the viewer inside, like a portal, and asks you to spend time there. To see how it feels. In a world designed to pull our attention continuously in different directions, all at the same time, these pieces are moments of stillness and reflection. No matter what you see or feel when interacting with the work, it presents a meditative moment.

Alexis Mixter was born in New England in 1978. She received her BFA from The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City with a focus on painting and art theory in 2004. Since graduating from college, one of her main objectives has been to encourage and uplift other emerging artists. Alexis was co-founder of the artist collective 121 Ludlow in New York City, before moving to California in 2009. Having exhibited her work everywhere from Hudson Valley in Upstate New York to Southern California she now resides in Southern Oregon.
